Fluid Teardowns — Nº 019

# It's just water.
They sell it like
_a rock band._

Liquid Death sells canned water — the most boring product imaginable — as the most entertaining brand in your fridge. Heavy-metal cans, "Murder Your Thirst," comedy content instead of ads. That turned a $0 idea into a $1.4 billion brand. Here's the teardown.

Liquid Death is proof that the product barely matters if the brand is unforgettable. It's mountain water — a commodity with essentially zero differentiation — sold in a tallboy can covered in heavy-metal skull art under the tagline "Murder Your Thirst." Founder Mike Cessario noticed people at punk and metal shows peeling the labels off their water bottles so they wouldn't look uncool, and built a brand for an identity nobody was serving. Instead of ads, Liquid Death makes comedy — sketches, stunts, an actual album. That turned water into a $1.4 billion brand.

By the end you'll have the seven plays behind selling a commodity as the most entertaining brand in the category — each with a "steal this" you can run tomorrow.

### The receipts — a joke, compounded

Public reporting · estimated annual revenue

**$1.4B valuation (2024)**Up from $525M in early 2022 — a brand, not a beverage, multiple

**$45M → $333M**Roughly 7× revenue growth in three years

## They didn't sell water. They sold an attitude.

Mike Cessario came from advertising and hardcore music, and he kept noticing the same thing at shows: fans peeling labels off water bottles because holding a Smartwater looked lame next to a beer. There was an entire identity — straight-edge, punk, metal, people who don't drink but still want to look the part — that no beverage served. So in 2019 he made water for them: a tallboy can, skull art, "Murder Your Thirst," "Death to Plastic."

The product is genuinely fine — mountain water, later sparkling and iced tea and an energy drink — but the brand is the point. Liquid Death makes entertainment instead of advertising: viral sketches, absurd stunts (selling "sold souls," a Martha Stewart collab), a fan "Country Club." Revenue went from **$45M in 2021** to roughly **$333M in 2024** across 133,000+ retail doors, at a $1.4B valuation.

**Attitude over hydration**"Murder Your Thirst" headlines the product wall — a feeling and an identity, not a hydration benefit. Nobody else in water talks like this.

_2_

**Packaging as identity**The tallboy can and skull art are the whole brand — a status object people are proud to hold, and a billboard in every hand.

**The brand is a playground**A "Country Club" membership, a "Timewaster 5000" in the nav — the site is built to entertain first and sell second.

## Seven plays every challenger brand should copy.

Play**01**

### Make the brand the entertainment

Liquid Death makes comedy — sketches, stunts, even an album — not ads. Content people actively seek out and share beats interruptive ads they skip. When the product is dull, **the marketing has to be the show**.

**The brand mark is the product** — water sold like a band's merch.

Steal this

If your category is boring, become the most entertaining brand in it. Make content people _choose to watch_, not ads they endure.

Play**02**

### Make the packaging the marketing

A tallboy can wrapped in skull art is a status object people are proud to hold — and **a billboard in every hand** at every party and show. The package does the advertising for free.

Steal this

Design your packaging as a status object and a billboard. If people want to be seen holding it, every unit is _earned media_.

Play**03**

### Serve a subculture nobody else will

Straight-edge and metal/punk fans embarrassed to hold a water bottle at a show were a passionate, unserved identity. Liquid Death became their flag. A **fervent niche** beats a lukewarm mass.

Steal this

Find an underserved identity and become its banner. A small tribe that _loves you_ is worth more than a big audience that shrugs.

Play**04**

### Give people a line to repeat

"Murder Your Thirst" and "Death to Plastic" are personalities, not benefit claims — bold, funny, and endlessly repeatable. A great line **travels for free**.

Steal this

Write a tagline with _attitude, not a feature_. Something bold and funny people quote does more than any benefit statement.

Play**05**

### Turn customers into a tribe
